Duxtop 9600LS Portable Induction Cooktop
The Duxtop 9600LS Portable Induction Cooktop was the best induction burner we tried. It did well on our cooking tests and was easy for various tasks. Since an induction cooktop can heat pans directly and efficiently through electromagnetism, it can get to temperature much faster than a flame or traditional electric burner. The Duxtop 9600LS got to temperature the quickest of the competition (and held that temperature more accurately). It cooked just as well as our brand-new LG electric range but in half the time.
In our tests, the Duxtop 9600LS was the best burner for cooking. With 1800 watts of power and temperature settings from 130 to 460 degrees Fahrenheit, the 9600LS worked well with all the ingredients and tasks we tried. It took 4 minutes to boil 2 quarts of water, faster than some cooktops that took up to 5 minutes to boil water.
The 9600LS burner also gently sautéed onions to turn out perfectly caramelized instead of blackened or burned as they did on the other cooktops we tested. The 9600LS also nicely browned a beef chuck roast in a cast-iron skillet at the highest heat setting.
Duxtop 8100MC Portable Induction Cooktop
The Duxtop 8100MC is a great choice for people who only use their computer occasionally, are on a tight budget, or don’t have much space. The Duxtop 8100MC costs about half as much as the 9600LS but cooks almost as well. It browns meat, sautes onions, and keeps a simmer better than the competition. It brought water to a boil about 3.5 minutes faster than its bigger sibling.
The 8100MC is slightly smaller than the 9600LS (about an inch shorter in depth) and is just as easy to use, but it doesn’t look as nice and has a simpler display. Like the 9600LS, the 8100MC lets you change the settings by temperature or power level. However, the temperature settings are not as precise, with increments of 40 degrees Fahrenheit instead of 20 degrees like on the 9600LS. Even more than with the higher-end model, we found it easier to change the burner output by power instead.
